Doddie Weir, Schalk Burger & Sons and Henry Fraser | Welbedacht Wine Estate | Wellington, South Africa | Rugby

Doddie Weir is not only a legendary Scottish Rugby International and British and Irish Lion, he is also one of the Sport’s great characters. As you will already know, he is fighting a battle against Motor Neuron Disease, and in June 2017 launched ‘My Name’5 Doddie Foundation’ to raise funds to aid research into the causes of MND, investigate potential cures, and to make grants to individuals suffering from MND to enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

Simon Halliday, co-founder of Sporting Wine Club, jumped at the chance to work with the Foundation and Kenny Logan of Logan Sports Marketing to kick off a unique fundraising initiative. Combining two of Doddie’s greatest passions – rugby and wine – the idea for ‘Doddie’5 Red Blend’ was born.

We approached Schalk Burger & Sons, a legendary Springbok family, and one of our leading Sporting Winemaker’s here at SWC, from their amazing Welbedacht Estate, in South Africa, to see if they could mix a traditional Bordeaux blend with 5 grape varieties, representing Doddie’s shirt. In imitable style, they have produced a real winner (just read the review from Master of Wine Greg Sherwood below!).

To top it all off, renowned mouth painter and former academy player at Saracens, Henry Fraser, has designed the label. A freak accident in 2009 left Henry paralysed from the shoulders down and he has since found a new path with his remarkable ‘mouth-painting’ artwork.

Everything from the concept to the creation of this wonderful wine represents all the values of the sporting community. Please support Doddie and his Foundation whilst enjoying some world-class sporting wine.

Don’t Just Take Our Word For It:

Wine Safari Score: 94/100 Greg Sherwood MW

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, this is a genuinely impressive red Cape Bordeaux blend assemblage made in a true style where the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its individual parts revealing very pretty, seductive aromatics of fine dried herbal spice, ripe black plums, earthy black currants, sappy cedar spice and a delicate brûléed kiss of oak. The palate is equally alluring showing a harmonious creamy opulence and a super silky texture together with a real accessibility, finessed tannins and a weightless brambly black berry fruit concentration on the finish. Youthfully exuberant and utterly delicious already, this is a fine wine with character and class… just like the man in who’s honour it was created to celebrate. Drink now and over 8+ years.
